In the novel the prince regent was actually a soldier and had been training in the army since he was 11. He went in the army to follow his older brother and he led a battle when he was I think 14. From there on his rank and fame grew especially because he was so young . Enemies from neighboring states feared him for his ruthlessness in battle. The people in his state especially the young men look up to him and the women want to be with him, this is one reason Ci Murong hates him because the people look down upon her as weak. Anyway when he came back to the court at the age of 25( He is 30 right now and Ci is 18) the emperor awarded him and soon he started taking over the states affairs as the emperor’s health declined. I think he even put the emperors favorite concubine there as a distraction and in the beginning he actually was planning to become emperor because he felt Ci was incompetent and thought the emperor was irresponsible.
This changes though and he sees her actual good qualities as being a good leader. This was why Ci Murong disliked him for a second reason and saw him as stealing her position that her dad promised her. As for his love life he thought his state came before his life and business before pleasure was his moto. I’m assuming he never slept or had an affair ever with a women and thought of them as a distraction from his power. The reason why he feels so intensely for the masked woman ( Ci Murong) is because she isn’t like the other women who are all over him and apparently as weird as this sounds gave him such pleasure that he never experienced( that’s the Chinese translation I swear). This is why he thinks she is special and he also has similar feeling for Ci, actually he begins to feel more strongly for her because he sees her as being more real. Nevertheless he still is curious about the masked woman.
